Current Projects

Rose City Copwatch is engaged in various kinds of work, including the following projects:

  • Community Patrol. Rose City Copwatch engages in Copwatching patrols. These patrols are organized community efforts to directly observe police stops, searches, and arrests. The patrols aim to reduce police violence and misconduct by their presence, and to demonstrate the community's right and ability to hold police directly accountable for their actions. Contact us if you'd like to get involved with our Copwatch community patrol! Participants receive training in how to safely observe police stops and other related skills.
  • Trainings & Workshops. Learn more about your rights when dealing with cops, gain skills for safely observing the police, and more! Get in touch with us to find out more.

Past Events & Projects

  • "Dance! Dance! Revolution." In March 2008, Rose City Copwatch held a dance party fundraiser, "Dance! Dance! Revolution!," at Branx in Portland. DJ Kinetic and DJ Harmony kept everyone dancing all night, spinning hot tracks that made the dance floor shake and made us think. Off the dance floor folks socialized, won raffle prizes, and talked about police issues in Portland, civil rights, and ways to build community power.
  • Know Your Rights! In November 2006, Rose City Copwatch members and volunteers installed over 250 Public Education posters throughout northeast Portland. The eye-catching posters feature brief, informative tips publicizing civilians' rights when interacting with the police. We reprised this successful project in outer southeast Portland in October 2007.
  • "Brains & Bones." In August 2005, Rose City Copwatch hosted an evening of trivia and dominoes, accompanied by the fine tunes of local DJs, at the Red and Black Cafe in Portland. The contests were an opportunity for community members to test their police and resistance trivia knowledge, and their skills at the intriguing game of dominoes, all in the relaxing environment of a neighborhood cafe.
  • "The Language of Swine and Freedom." On Wednesday, November 16, 2005 Rose City Copwatch presented an evening of multi-media art as a part of the 2 Gyrlz Performative Arts Enteractive Language Festival. The event showcased local artists (including Rose City Copwatch members), and was a benefit for Rose City Copwatch. Selected artworks from "The Language of Swine & Freedom" were also displayed in December 2005 and January 2006 at Beulahland Coffee and Alehouse, 118 NE 28th Avenue in Portland.
  • "Making Police Obsolete." A benefit for Rose City Copwatch. Local author Kristian Williams read from his book Our Enemies in Blue: Police and Power in America, at Vinnie's Pizza on Thursday, March 10, 2005. Williams featured a chapter about community-based alternatives to the police around the globe. A lively discussion followed among the 50 attendees.
  • Shaming Bad Cops. In February 2004, Rose City Copwatch held a contest offering $40 in groceries to the first person to provide a verifiable photograph of killer cop Scott McCollister. In April 2004, we released a poster featuring photos of both McCollister and more recent killer cop, Jason Sery. The posters were widely supported by members of the public, and successfully brought critical attention to the institutional protections afforded to killer cops.
