PRESS RELEASEFor Immediate Release
Rose City Copwatch Promotes People's RightsPORTLAND – On November 18, Rose City Copwatch members and volunteers installed over 250 public education posters throughout north and northeast Portland. The eye-catching posters feature brief, informative tips publicizing civilians' rights when interacting with the police. The project is part of Rose City Copwatch's ongoing work to promote peoples' constitutional rights when dealing with the police. Each poster presents tactics for safely asserting your rights, using simple phrases like "I don't want to answer any questions; I want to talk to a lawyer" and "I do not consent to a search." The posters also promote the people's right to "copwatch," a technique to safely, legally and effectively monitor police conduct. Sara Libby, a Rose City Copwatch member, believes these simple posters serve an important purpose. "Every person has rights, whether police are just talking to them or if they are being arrested," Libby states. "We believe that people have more power when they understand their rights, and feel confident to use them." The posters can be seen on Rose City Copwatch's website: www.rosecitycopwatch.org. Rose City Copwatch provides community education workshops in civil rights and "copwatching," conducts regular patrols to monitor police activity, and gained community acclaim and media notoriety in 2004 for sponsoring a successful contest to find and publicize photos of killer cops Scott McCollister and Jason Sery.
