Radical Police Accountability Group Sponsors 'Swine' Art Show

"The Language of Swine and Freedom"
Wendesday, November 16, 2005 at 7pm
Backspace Annex (115 NW 5th Avenue, Portland)

Radical police accountability organization Rose City Copwatch will host the multi-media art show "The Language of Swine and Freedom" Wednesday November 16 at the Backspace Annex (115 NW 5th Ave) at 7pm. The show, a first for Rose City Copwatch, will display and offer for sale original artwork by a dozen local artists, with half of the proceeds to benefit Rose City Copwatch.

"The Language of Swine and Freedom" will showcase local art inspired by the dual themes of police violence and community power. The show will feature noted direct action photographer Bette Lee, incendiary mixed-media work from anarcho-maestro Alex Lilly, video from the Ubergay Cabaret, multi-media collages by Beth Reddy, specially-commissioned work from muralist Robin Corbo, pen and ink drawings by Kieran McGuire, comic-book art by Shane Ingersoll, and a sculptural installation by Elizabeth Cartozian and Karolina Puk.

The members of Rose City Copwatch will debut an interactive performance piece entitled "Authoritron 2K6." The Authoritron is an interactive language machine that approximates and highlights the way language and symbols are manipulated to serve power in police-civilian encounters. Guests will be identified for common but "suspicious" behavior and directed to report to the Authoritron for questioning and processing. The Authoritron will utilize verbal techniques employed by police officers during the interrogation process and guests will receive a "police report" at the end of the process that will demonstrate how seemingly innocuous conversations with police can provide pretext for legal detention, searches, arrest, and criminal charges.

Rose City Copwatch works to eliminate or radically change police institutions, build community power as an alternative to the state, reduce police violence and disrupt the ability of the police to enforce race and class lines. The group conducts community education seminars in civil rights and "copwatching," weekly patrols to monitor police activity, and gained community acclaim and media notoriety in 2004 for sponsoring a successful contest to find and publicize photos of killer cops Scott McCollister and Jason Sery.

For more information about the show, Rose City Copwatch, or to arrange an interview with a Copwatcher or artist, call (503) 993-9464 or email .

"The Language of Swine and Freedom" is part of 2gyrlz Performative Arts' "Enteractive Language Festival 2005." For more information on the Festival, visit 2grylz Performative Arts or call (503) 234-4950.
